What Being A Green Parent Means to Me
“Being a green parent means taking steps to live a green life, and to perpetuate healthy environmental practices from your children. As a green parent it is important not only to practice green living, but to pass on the green ideology to your children so that they may pass it on to theirs. There are several aspects to being a green parent.
First, living green means making important environmental choices. The easiest way to live green is to reduce your appetite for consumer goods. Manufacturing of any sort uses large amounts of energy and resources. This includes gasoline. Walk, bike, or use public transportation and car pooling methods when you can. You can greatly reduce your impact on global depletion by reusing items, using recycled or refurbished items, or just going without unnecessary items. For your children, you can encourage outdoor play that not only uses less equipment but also teaches a love for nature and the environment. This will teach them that it needs to be protected. Toy swaps and imaginative games are also ways to show a greener lifestyle.
Being a green parent also means making health conscious decisions for you and your children. These include eating organic, locally grown foods and using environmentally safe cleaning supplies. It just makes sense to put as few chemicals into your body as possible. Obviously eating foods that have been genetically altered or covered in chemical pesticides are a bad idea, but chemicals from cleaners can enter your body through respiration or through your eyes, ears, nose, mouth or even your pores. An overlooked area of health is the overuse of antibiotics that have created super-virus strains.
Finally, the most important part of being a green parent is passing on the ideology of green living to family, friends, and your children. Only through an international group effort can we begin to reverse the effects of large industry and greed on the environment. Every group effort starts with the people closes to you. Being a green parent means not only doing your best to reduce your footprint on the world, but teaching your children to do the same. Change doesn’t happen quickly, but through green parenting passed down from generation to generation we have a chance to save our world.” - C. Larson, Local Realtor
